Rumors of a smaller iPad aren’t new. We have been hearing that since years. However when credible names like AllthingsD start to announce almost certain launch of an iPad Mini, the world takes notice. Even before the iPhone 5 became real we started to notice the strong rumors with a certain certainty about a smaller iPad. Lots of theories are out there about the specifications and built of the same, so far this seems to be the consensus
- A 7.85″ screen
- 1024×768 resolution
- at least one camera
- Lightning port
Apple might have their own justification and philosophy about a smaller tablet but the world would surely point out the timing. The Nexus 7 tablet from Google is out and sells cheap. The Kindle Fire isn’t a bad option for many either. Apple might want to come in and make sure it has the low end of the market tapped so that they can sell more content. It is crucial for Apple to have a critical mass consuming content on its devices for them to cut lucrative media deals for its Audio and Video offerings. As Apple TV evolves, this would integrate across screens for Apple.
Time timing of Apple’s launch also raises eye-brows as Microsoft is about to make its boldest bet in history with the Windows 8 launch on 26th October. It not only brings a new mobile and desktop OS but also Microsoft’s own Tablet computer, the Surface to life. So is the iPad Mini or iPad Air as some call it, Apple’s way of welcoming Microsoft Surface?
